Health insurance in Georgia
The ₾30,000 rule since 1 January 2026, what visitor policies and annual plans cost, what students need and how claims work, with the official sources.
Updated 30.10.2026
Since 1 January 2026, every visitor to Georgia needs health and accident insurance for the whole stay. Here's what the rule asks for, what visitor policies and long-term plans cost, what students need and how claims work, as of October 2026.
The rule
- Who: tourists, meaning anyone who stays at least one night and up to a year. Diplomats, embassy and international-organisation staff, people covered by a treaty and international drivers are exempt.
- How much: a sum insured of at least ₾30,000, covering every day from arrival to departure.
- Which insurer: any licensed insurer, Georgian or foreign.
- The document: on paper or on your phone, in English or Georgian, showing who is insured, the territory, the dates, the risks, the limits and the premium.
- Checks: the patrol police can ask for it at the border, and airlines may ask at check-in.
- Without it: you can be refused entry. No official text sets a fine, whatever some websites say.
The rule is written for tourists and doesn't mention residence-permit holders, so if you live here, carry proof of your health policy when you fly in. Residence permits themselves don't require insurance: residence permits in Georgia.
Visitor policies
Georgian insurers sell visitor policies made for the rule. They cover emergencies in Georgia only, not routine care or conditions you already have. Buy before you fly: some start hours after you pay.
| Insurer | A day | Cover | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unison | ₾1.7 | ₾30,000 | ₾100 deductible per outpatient visit |
| Irao | ₾2 | ₾30,000 | over 65, half of the costs are paid |
| Imedi L | ₾2 | ₾30,000 | up to age 70 |
| Aldagi | ₾2, less for longer stays | ₾30,000 | online only, up to age 70 |
| Ardi | from ₾2 | ₾30,000 | no deductible; over 65, half is paid |
| GPI | not published | ₾100,000 | bought in Georgia, it starts after 24 hours |
A month costs about ₾51–₾60 at Unison, Irao, Imedi L or Aldagi.
Long-term plans
If you live here, a local annual plan covers doctor visits, tests and medicines at the insurer's partner clinics, usually for ₾50–₾90 a month at 30:
- Unison: ₾49–₾120 a month, the same at any age from 1 to 65.
- Imedi L UNO: ₾50–₾99 a month, up to age 60, with a passport or a residence permit.
- Irao Pulse: from ₾65 a month, by age; emergency hospital cover starts after 3 months.
- Wizer (formerly PSP): ₾60–₾135 a month.
- GPI Exclusive: foreigners pay one and a half times the listed price, about ₾130 a month at 31–35.
Aldagi sells no individual health plan. Every plan has waiting periods: emergencies are covered after 15 days or 3 months, depending on the plan, planned operations after 12 months and pregnancy after 12 to 24 months, and conditions you already have usually not at all. Keep a visitor or travel policy until the wait is over. If you want the plan to count at the border, check that its total sum insured is at least ₾30,000: many cheap plans have lower limits.
Nomad and travel insurance
International nomad policies such as SafetyWing (about $63 for four weeks under 40) and Genki (from about €53 a month) cover far more than ₾30,000 and go with you from country to country. None of them issues a certificate for Georgia's rule, though, and their certificates often leave out the premium, which the rule asks to see. Carry the English certificate with your name, dates, limit and territory, or add a cheap Georgian visitor policy for your days in Georgia.
Students
Foreign students have their own rule, from 2020: a policy from a Georgian insurer worth at least ₾70,000 in total, for at least a semester. Universities have to keep uninsured foreign students out of classes. Imedi L's year-long student policy with a ₾70,000 limit costs ₾324; TBC and GPI sell student policies too. Where to study: cafés to study in, near each university.
State healthcare
Georgia's Universal Healthcare Programme is for citizens. Foreigners can't join it, residence-permit holders included. Free for everyone in Georgia: the 112 ambulance crew's emergency help, and urgent rabies and anti-serum treatment. The hospital care after the ambulance is paid.
How claims work
With a Georgian policy, call the insurer's 24/7 line first, or within 24 hours in an emergency. It sends you to a partner clinic, which bills the insurer directly, and you pay only the deductible or your share. Skip the call and the insurer can refuse to pay. At other clinics you pay and claim it back, usually within 30 days; some insurers want the documents in Georgian or with a notarised translation.
What care costs without insurance
A first visit to a GP at CITO costs ₾100, a blood count about ₾25 and an online consultation at Synevo ₾40. Clinics, pharmacies and emergencies: healthcare in Tbilisi.
