Healthcare in Tbilisi

Private clinics, what a doctor costs, pharmacies, tap water, and the health insurance every visitor to Georgia needs since 2026.

Updated 25.10.2026

Healthcare in Tbilisi is mostly private, and foreigners pay for it themselves or through insurance. Since 1 January 2026, every visitor also has to hold health and accident insurance for the whole stay. Here's what the rule asks for, where to go, and what things cost, as of October 2026.

The insurance rule

  • Who: visitors staying at least a night, for up to a year; a few groups, such as diplomats, are exempt.
  • What: health and accident cover of at least ₾30,000, from a Georgian or a foreign insurer.
  • For how long: from the day you arrive to the day you leave.
  • The document: on paper or on your phone, in English or Georgian, showing the dates, the risks covered and the limits. The police can ask for it at the border.

Local insurers such as Aldagi, GPI, Imedi L and Unison sell policies that meet the rule, and Imedi L sells them at the Public Service Halls. An international nomad policy can work too, as long as the document shows the cover and the dates the rule asks for.

Clinics

Private clinics with English-speaking doctors, often used by foreigners, include American Medical Centers, CITO, Inter Clinic and MediClub Georgia; the big hospital groups Evex and New Hospitals and the Aversi clinics also see foreign patients. Expect to pay on the spot and claim it back from your insurer, unless they bill each other directly.

What it costs

A visit to a private GP costs around ₾90, a dental filling from about ₾130. Hospital stays and specialists cost more, which is what the insurance is for.

Pharmacies

Aversi, PSP and GPC are on every other corner, and many Aversi pharmacies are open around the clock. Antibiotics and many other medicines need a prescription.

Tap water

The water company says Tbilisi's tap water meets the standards, and many people drink it. In older buildings with old pipes, a filter is a good idea.

In an emergency

Call 112. For rabies shots after a dog bite, go to a clinic the same day.
